The Royal Spanish Academy (RAE ) recognize the terms rheumatism and rheumatism , which come from Latin rheuma and have their farthest etymological origin in a Greek word that can be translated as "flow" . Both concepts (rheumatism and reunion) are synonyms for rheumatism , a disease characterized by a joint swelling .

At present, the idea of rheumatism usually refers to various disorders that share similar symptoms. That's why people usually talk about rheumatic disorders , which are treated by a specialty of the medicine called rheumatology .

The rheumatoid arthritis , the osteoarthritis , the spondyloarthropathies , the systemic sclerosis , the osteoporosis and the spondylitis are some of the rheumatologic diseases more frequent. In general it can be said that these are conditions that cause damage to joints, tendons, muscles and / or the bones, generating various complications in the patient.

With respect to rheumatoid arthritis , it is a disease inflammatory (since it manifests through inflammations) autoimmune systemic (It is characterized by affecting more than one system simultaneously, including several organs, anywhere in the body). One of the main features of this disorder is that it produces swollen joints of the feet and hands , destroying them progressively, deforming them at different levels and affecting their functional capacity.

While the causes of rheumatoid arthritis are unknown, the autoimmunity It is essential for its appearance, its chronic character and its progress. It is associated with the presence of citrullinated cyclic antiseptics and the rheumatoid factor , among others autoantibodies (antibodies generated by the immune system, which affects the individual himself, acting against a varied number of antigens). It is worth mentioning that sometimes this type of rheumatism manifests itself through problems in the heart, skin, lungs or eyes.

The atrosis , on the other hand, which is also known as osteoarthritis, arises as a result of cartilage wear (the tissue that cushions and protects the bones and promotes the functioning of the joints ). It is the most common type of rheumatism, mainly in elderly individuals, although it appears prematurely in people suffering from genetic diseases of the connective tissue (a set of organic tissues with the same origin), such as the syndrome of joint hyperlaxity and the Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.

Some statistical data reveal a curious tendency on the part of women to suffer osteoarthritis; in Spain, for example, approximately 16% of people over 20 suffer from it, and three quarters are female .

The pains in the wrists, knees, ankles, hip, shoulders, neck and back can be part of the disorders linked to rheumatism. It is usual for chronic pain difficult to treat. It should be noted that the level of humidity and the low atmospheric pressure tend to have an increase in pain .

Because rheumatic disorders can have different origins, treatments are also varied. Broadly speaking, it can be said that rheumatism is treated with the supply of analgesics and anti-inflammatory that contribute to minimize pain. Anyway, it is a medical professional who is responsible for indicating the treatment adequate after review and corresponding studies.

According to various studies, rheumatism seems to be linked to weather conditions ; Although there is no irrevocable evidence to support this theory, a survey that was carried out in 1995 with the help of 557 people suffering from rheumatic disorders yielded results that suggested that barometric pressure and its changes were closely related to pain. In general, individuals with bone pain claim to feel better in hot and dry climates than in cold and humid areas.
