Before entering to determine the meaning of the term regret, it is necessary that we know its etymological origin. In this sense, we can say that it emanates from Latin, specifically from the verb "think", which can be translated as "weigh" or "estimate."

To weigh It is a concept that is used in different ways. It can be about suffering or of dislike that is experienced before a painful event. For example: “The Foreign Minister expressed his regret for the attack that killed hundreds of people in Baghdad”, "This candidate did not mind the sorrow of the people before the death of their leader", "The news of Mr. Lotrolli's death caused me deep regret".

The expression "despite", meanwhile, refers to something that is done or said beyond certain factors . If a person indicates "This afternoon I'm going to run to the beach despite the rain", will be indicating that you plan to perform physical activity even if the weather conditions are adverse.

There are numerous phrases that make use of the term that now concerns us. This would be the case of the following: "despite the regrets." It is an adverbial phrase that is synonymous with "despite all obstacles."

In a similar sense, if a sports journalist comments that "The game will be played despite the incidents that were recorded around the stadium", will be reporting that a sporting event will be held even when there was a conflict .

Many are the songs that, throughout history, have been performed using the term regret in their titles. Among these we would highlight the following:
- "In spite of everything I still love you", which the artists Camilo Sesto and Ángela Carrasco interpreted as a duet.
- "Despite everything," by Alejandro Fernández.
- "Despite the distance" by Hansel Camacho.
- "Despite everything," by Ana Gabriel.

The same happens in the field of literature. A good example of the use of the word that concerns us is the work "Filomeno, in my regret (Memories of a misplaced man)" The Spanish writer Gonzalo Torrente Ballester published it in 1988 obtaining the recognized Planeta Prize. It tells the story of Filomeno Freijomil, a middle class man whom the reader will meet both during the interwar period in the country and at the beginning of the Franco dictatorship. From his childhood until his maturity, a review of his life will be carried out, in which he will discover himself from his love affairs to his political problems and ideals.

Weighing, on the other hand, is the action that allows calculate the mass of a body through a special device. However, what is done is to determine the weight of an object: "I'm going to weigh myself before going to the doctor to tell him how much he has lost since my previous visit", "Before mixing the ingredients, I suggest weighing each of them to know if you are using the appropriate amounts for this recipe", "Despite the croaker that had just fished, the man was surprised".
