The first step we are going to take in order to discover the meaning of the term digital image is to determine its etymological origin. In this sense, the two words that make it up come from Latin:
• Image comes from “imago”, which, in turn, is the result of the derivation of the verb “imitari”, which is synonymous with “imitate”.
• Digital, on the other hand, comes from “digitalis”, which can be translated as “relative to the finger” and which is the result of the sum of two components: “digitus”, which means “finger”, and the suffix “-al” , which indicates "relative to".

The visual representation of an object is known as image . This representation can be done through various procedures or techniques, such as Photography , the painting or the video .

Digital , on the other hand, is that relating to the fingers, although currently the concept is used in the field of technology in reference to the representation of information from binary mode (in two states).

These definitions allow us to indicate that a digital image is that two-dimensional representation constructed from a binary matrix (composed of ones and zeros). It is possible to obtain these images in different ways.

One possibility is to use a device that handles the analog-digital conversation . That is the case of a digital camera or a scanner. With a camera of this type, a person You can take an image and store it in digital format, either computer (computer ) or on another support. The scanner, meanwhile, allows you to register and capture a physical image (such as a photo printed in a magazine) and transform it into a digital image.

Another option is to create digital images through a software . With a basic program like Paint , it is possible to draw a drawing with the help of the mouse and create a digital image.

When it comes to getting a good digital image it is essential to take care of aspects such as color depth, resolution of both input and output, size, gray levels, format (jpeg, png, gif, ...), the texture or color mode, without forgetting, of course, saturation or brightness.

According to its resolution, the digital image can be classified in different ways. It is possible to speak, in this sense, of matrix image or of vector image . The preference for one or another format depends on the needs of the designer or the person who will use the image.

In this sense, we would have to say that vector images are those that are composed of what are simple geometric shapes, such as polygons or segments of different types.

On the other hand, there are the bitmap images, which are those that are characterized because they are formed from small squares that are called pixels. Those are also known as bitmap images and are widely used in the world of cinema and photography. Why? Because they offer a wide variety of color tones and are also characterized by their high quality.
